NEW DELHI: In a recent announcement, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has made significant changes to the schedule for the assembly elections in Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim. The commission has rescheduled the counting of votes from June 4 to June 2, 2024, citing the impending expiration of the terms of the legislative assemblies of both states on the latter date.
The decision, conveyed through an official statement by the Election Commission, underscores the necessity of conducting the elections to the Legislative Assemblies of Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim before the conclusion of their current terms. The statement further clarified that this adjustment pertains exclusively to the state legislative assemblies and does not affect the schedule for parliamentary constituencies in these states.
“The commission has decided to amend the following in respect of Schedule for General Election to State Legislative Assemblies of Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim only,” the official statement remarked.
The revised schedule follows closely on the heels of the announcement of dates for the Lok Sabha and assembly elections made by the Election Commission a day earlier.
According to the updated timetable, the assembly elections for Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim are slated to be held on April 19, 2024. For Arunachal Pradesh, the last date for submitting nominations has been fixed as March 27, while the deadline for withdrawal of candidatures has been set for April 19.
The announcement made on Saturday outlined the comprehensive schedule for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, which will be conducted in seven phases spanning from April 19 to June 1.
These adjustments by the Election Commission come in the wake of meticulous planning and coordination to ensure the smooth conduct of democratic processes in the country. With the new schedule in place, stakeholders in Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim are gearing up for an important electoral exercise, while the nation as a whole prepares for the upcoming general elections, poised to shape the future trajectory of Indian democracy.
